Sega took to Summer Game Fest to reveal a completely new Sonic game. Sonic Superstars is this retro title and is taking the series back to its 2D roots. Sonic Superstars is releasing in fall 2023 digitally and physically for $59.99 on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

What is Sonic Superstars?

Sonic Superstars is a 2D title that supports up to four-player local co-op (online play was not mentioned). It takes place on North Star Islands and features a new story featuring Dr. Eggman.

Sega noted it has “reimagined” the game for “current-generation platforms,” but it is also releasing on the older systems, too. However, the company said it will have familiar controls that will still appeal to “legacy” fans.

Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose are the four playable characters, and players can find seven Chaos Emeralds to get new abilities. These abilities include creating clones, climbing waterfalls, and more.
