What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Hammered (Legacy of Magic, Book 1)?
I wrote ten books in my Death Before Dragons urban fantasy series with a talented, tall, and beautiful half-elf heroine. Elves are always popular in fantasy! But dwarves are usually the sidekicks. When it was time to write a spinoff series, I thought… let’s do a half-dwarf this time. She’s stout, strong, and attracts all the wrong guys (some with tusks). She’s been a fun departure from those elfy types.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Hammered (Legacy of Magic, Book 1), what would they be?
Haha, I’ve been doing an Alanis Morissette bike workout repeatedly while working on this series (apparently, you’re supposed to take writing breaks to exercise regularly), so I’ll say “Hand in my Pocket” for my heroine.
What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I enjoy both science fiction and fantasy with some romance mixed in, and, yes, it’s what I like to read too.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
I’m trying The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy on the recommendation of a friend.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
When she’s fleeing from the police (not her fault, really!), Matti ends up spending the night in the rather magical house of the elf assassin who’s the only person willing to help her right now. It has a lot of magical gizmos that she doesn’t know how to work, and she ends up losing her temper and destroying a few things…
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I write on my laptop and rarely at a desk, so I often end up with a dog head slung across my arm or the keys. This can make things a little challenging.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
People aren’t always what they seem.
